Editor's take
Sony's first-generation professional standard zoom for full-frame E-mount, a fast constant f/2.8 GM lens covering the everyday 24-70mm range for weddings, events, and portraits.
The original SEL2470GM was the lens that convinced a lot of working photographers to move to Sony, and it still holds up: natural rendering, strong center-to-edge sharpness, and a fast, near-silent Direct Drive SSM autofocus motor built for tracking moving subjects.
It doesn't have optical image stabilization, relying instead on the camera body's in-body stabilization, and at roughly 886g plus a large 82mm filter thread it's a substantial lens on smaller bodies. It has since been succeeded by a lighter Mark II, but the original remains widely available and often at a lower price.
Pros
- Excellent sharpness across the frame, even wide open
- Fast, near-silent autofocus motor built for tracking
- Weather-sealed professional build
Cons
- No optical image stabilization
- Heavier than the newer Mark II version
- Expensive
Ideal for: Sony full-frame shooters who need one professional zoom to cover weddings, events, and portraits.
Reviews
Reviewers consistently praise its sharpness and autofocus speed; the main recurring note is its weight compared to the newer Mark II.
