Editor's take
A lower-impedance (48 ohm) version of beyerdynamic's DT 990 Pro open-back studio reference headphone, drivable from a phone with no amp needed, at $229.99 with 512 reviews at 4.5 stars.
The DT 990 Pro X is beyerdynamic's newer, lower-impedance (48 ohm) take on its classic DT 990 Pro open-back reference headphone — Amazon's own listing highlights that, unlike the original 250-ohm version, this one reaches full volume from a phone or laptop directly, with no headphone amp required. It uses a newer STELLAR.45 driver and a detachable 3m mini-XLR cable rather than the older fixed coiled cable.
Like the 250-ohm DT 990 Pro, this is an open-back design: Amazon's spec table lists 'Noise Control: None', and the product marketing itself notes the open-back sound is audible to people nearby by design, trading isolation for a wide, natural mixing soundstage. Amazon's spec table lists item weight at 10.3 ounces and a 45mm driver, but its 'Frequency Range' field just says 'Wide' rather than giving actual numbers, and the separate 'Frequency Response: 5 hertz' field looks like an incomplete or truncated figure rather than a real spec — so we left frequency response unconfirmed rather than guessing a range.
With 512 reviews at 4.5 stars — a much smaller review base than the original DT 990 Pro's 20,207 — this is a newer product in the same reference-headphone family, priced at $229.99 with no listed discount.
Pros
- Lower 48-ohm impedance drives to full volume from a phone or laptop with no amp needed
- Detachable mini-XLR cable, unlike the fixed cable on the original DT 990 Pro
- Open-back reference soundstage for mixing and critical listening
- 2-year manufacturer warranty
Cons
- Much smaller review base (512) than the original 250-ohm DT 990 Pro (20,207 reviews)
- Amazon's spec table doesn't give real frequency response numbers — its 'Frequency Range' field just says 'Wide' and the separate 'Frequency Response' field looks like an incomplete figure, so this spec is unconfirmed
- Open-back design provides zero noise isolation — sound leaks out and is audible to others
- Wired only, no Bluetooth, no microphone
Ideal for: Mixing and critical-listening users who want the open-back DT 990 Pro sound but need to drive it straight from a phone or laptop without an amp.
